NJ Attorney General Pushes New Anti-Steroid In Law Enforcement Reforms
Across the US, law enforcement agencies have the authority to randomly test their officers for drugs, however, there are no laws currently on the books designed to address concerns about steroid usage. Because police officers are trained to be authoritative, aggressive and instructed to make split second decisions in situations involving weapons, steroid usage amongst officers is especially dangerous. In New Jersey, a news article detailing one doctor's criminal activities caused police departments to investigate their own officer. According to the New Jersey Star-Ledger, Dr. Joseph Colao routinely injected more than 250 police officers with anabolic steroids. Although steroids are sometimes used to treat chronic illnesses, none of the officers seen by Dr. Colao were sick.Investigators in New Jersey fear that Dr. Colao was not the only physician injecting and prescribing steroids to police officers. As a result, Attorney General Paula Dow has launched an initiative that would give police departments the power to test officers for steroid usage on a national level. It is already illegal to use steroids without a prescription in the US, however, some well connected police officers have been able to get around the law.
Steroid usage in New Jersey police officers has been rumored for years, but until the story at the Star-Ledger broke, there was no physical evidence. Before charges could be filed against Dr. Joseph Colao, he passed away. Investigators are still looking to see if there are other New Jersey doctors that are prescribing anabolic steroids to their patients illegally.
